Synopsis: (taken from the Star Maker Home Video liner notes)
Episode One: "The Expeditions." It is the year 1999, and as the Earth faces it's inevitable extinction, three star-crossed expeditions are launched toward Mars. The fate of each mission unveils another layer of the mystery that shrouds the red planet.
Episode Two: "The Settlers." Colonel John Wilder (Rock Hudson), is convinced that the Martian civilization, seemingly destroyed by germs transported from Earth, still exists in an unknown form. Many have accompanied Wilder to this planet of dreams, illusions and hope. What awaits them is a series of strange apparitions and eerie encounters.
Episode Three: "The Martians." Mars becomes mankind's only hope when the Earth explodes in the inferno of nuclear war. Colonel John Wilder travels to an ancient Martian city where he discovers a secret that will forever alter the course of human existence.
Commentary:
An ambitious project but, sadly, a disappointment. The story is poorly paced, the effects are cheap and unconvincing, and the overall production is (yawn) boring. This mini-series is at best a pale shadow of Ray Bradbury's classic novel. --RJ
